The Online Marketing Blog by Lee Odden lists 25 women that “rock social media” and the list includes two women from Washington, DC: Shonali Burke and Debbie Weil.
Regarding Burke, the report notes: A true social butterfly, Shonali can be found speaking at conferences or Waxing Unlyrical on media & communications topics. More likely, you’ll find her working with clients on strategic communications, PR and social media as an independent consultant – a career she moved into after working with the ASPCA.
Regarding Weil, the report states: Debbie “wrote the book” on corporate blogging (The Corporate Blogging Book) when most online marketing and communications professionals were still trying to figure out what a blog was. She runs a successful corporate blogging and social media consulting practice, works as a strategic advisor for Compendium software and continues to share her insights via blog and public speaking.
Odden states that many on his list “are from the PR industry that I know so it’s biased in that way. Suggestions of other accomplished & influential women in social media (consultants and corporate) are welcome.”

In addition, Shonali Burke is taking over the reins at Women Grow Business which she describes as “an amazing community hosted by Network Solutions to help women do exactly that: grow their business.”
With content from leading women entrepreneurs on a variety of subjects, Burke reports that “Women Grow Business has really made a name for itself in an extremely short span of time, thanks to a great many people, but particularly, I think, because of Shashi Bellamkonda and Jill Foster; it’s the latter whose able hands I’ll be taking over WGB from.” More at www.womengrowbusiness.com.
