- Karen Saverino, APR, who spent the past 12 years  working for advertising and strategic communication  firms in Baltimore and Washington, D.C., has launched Eightfold Strategy, a branding, marketing and communication firm that will focus on social purpose clients.  Most recently, she was vice president at Metropolitan Group in D.C. and she worked at Carton Donofrio Partners in Baltimore. She also directed public relations for an international publishing company and worked as a newspaper reporter. - MDB Communications moves to 1730 M Street, 8th floor.  The move to larger quarters comes follows several account wins and double-digit growth in online and emerging media during the past two years.

 

- Environics Communications adds Melissa Garcia as an account supervisor in the Washington office. Garcia comes to Environics from Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, where her clients included Berlex Laboratories (now Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals); Merck; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention; the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services; and the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health.  Previously, Garcia was an account executive at Spectrum Science Communications.

- Widmeyer Communications announced that Daniel Kaufman, pictured above, will lead its Washington-based PreK-12 education practice.  A Fulbright scholar with a Ph.D. in Political Science, Kaufman has spent the past several years working on behalf of teachers.  He was Director of Communications at the Maryland State Education Association, Maryland’s largest teachers union.  There he led strategic communications, branding and message development and media outreach efforts for the 70,000-member education association. Kaufman also worked for the National Education Association.

- Pappas Group adds Stefan Poulos as executive creative director.  Poulos joins Pappas following 12 years as creative director at Discovery Channel, where he helped brand and promote many of the network’s most recognizable programs.  At Pappas, Poulos will lead creative teams in strategic development, execution and promotion of brands for a number of clients, including SyFy, Georgetown University and VW Credit.

- Warschawski, a Baltimore-based agency, announced three new accounts: Avon Protection Systems, Shifman Mattress and Concurrent Technologies Corporation. The agency also added Gary Budd as senior associate responsible for creating, implementing and overseeing strategic marketing communications campaigns for consumer, government and B-to-B clients.  Prior to joining Warschawski, he was responsible for directing the public relations department at Baltimore-based Devaney & Associates.

- Sage Communications reports that its subsidiary JDG Communications was awarded six 2009 American Graphic Design Certificates of Excellence by Graphic Design USA magazine in one of the largest design competitions in the country. The award program recognizes outstanding new work in 23 categories from print and packaging to Internet and interactive design.
