The AMA DC programming team decided in late Spring to hold a sports-marketing event for its members. VP Programming – Speaker Series Karen Alston wanted to convene an “all star” panel that highlighted Washington, DC, as a sports mecca.

On Wednesday, August 12, 2009, AMA DC held such a panel. Moderated by the Dean of Sports Management and
Marketing at Georgetown University, Matt Winkler, members and guests were treated to a lively discussion on the industry and challenges of marketing sports in Washington. The standing-room-only event featured industry leaders such as; Diane Romo Thomas, director of community affairs at the Greater Washington Sports Alliance; Tim McDermott, VP marketing at the Washington Capitals; John Guagliano, VP of marketing at the Washington Nationals; David Howard, general manager at ESPN 980; and Nicola Murphy, Octagon.

Members and guests were able to mingle with these sports industry heavyweights, discuss career opportunities and the day to day challenges facing these marketing leaders.

Karen commented post event, that this year the speaker series will focus on different industries, personalities and unique people who market products and services in the metropolitan Washington, DC, region.
