Reporters use social media for research and leads, according to six top reporters who spoke July 29th at PRSA-NCC’s “How to Get Big Media Hits in a Social Media World,” discussion. The session was moderated by Aaron Cohen, vice president of media and digital communications at MS&L.

CNN’s Joe Johns checks “the temperature of the audience,” on Facebook. Reuter’s Susan Heavey and Jim Snyder of The Hill use blogs for story research. But Marilyn Geewax of NPR quipped, “I don’t have time so shower, let alone Tweet.”

Audience members who Tweeted during the session at the US Navy Memorial said the panel helped them form “a new appreciation for media,” and that they “loved meeting new people.”

The 100 attendees learned from BusinessWeek’s John Carey that “the best feature stories are the ones you don’t want us to write.” Univision’s Fernando Pizarro lamented that, “we have to do more and more with less and less.”
