Equals Three Communications, Inc. was the single ad agency participating at the Creative Entrepreneurship, Economic Development, and Education in Cultural Life Conference hosted by the Arts, Entertainment and Media Management Department of Columbia College Chicago. The event took place July 15-18, 2009.
The conference focused on creative entrepreneurship as one of the keys to economic growth and creation of new jobs in the creative sector. It served as a meeting place for practitioners and academics seeking to understand the latest developments in creative entrepreneurship while engaging in constructive dialogue, learning from each other’s experience; discussing the practical approaches to develop efficient creative entrepreneurship methodologies, and exploring best practices both in the U.S. and abroad.
“As an agency that is nationally and internationally active both in creative and economic development, we believe we have an important role to play in terms of communicating the added values that primarily social marketing agencies bring to this field and related processes.” said Nil Sismanyazici-Navaie, VP of Account Services at Equals Three. “Among the biggest challenges that we see in this field is the stakeholders’ limited understanding of multi-sectoral and multidisciplinary approach to economic development. There are also numerous definitions of terms that create confusion/misinterpretation within and across sectors. Insufficient research, especially longitudinal studies around creative enterprises (including social) and their impact, the lacking adequate resource allocation (financial and ready-human capacity) to sustain efforts and to scale up, and limited investment in communications/marketing efforts to support outreach and assessment are also criticial” continued Ms. Navaie, who was invited as a panelist for the conference.
Among the conference participants were specialists from organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, Department of Education Office of School and Youth Development, Global Center for Cultural Entrepreneurship, Duquesne University, Goldsmiths College, London University, NYU Steindhardt, The X-ART Entertainment Management Group, New England Conservatory of Music, Centre for Cultural Policy Research University of Glasgow, and more.
The well-attended and productive conference was supported by the European Network of Cultural Administration Training Centres, ENCATC - the only European network gathering together higher educational institutions and training organisations dealing with cultural management education and training. Since its creation, the Network has actively cooperated with other European and international institutions, including the Council of Europe, UNESCO, the European Commission, the European Parliament, the European Cultural Foundation, the Nordic Cultural Fund, the Open Society Institute and KulturKontakt, Austria, among others.
