Two interesting items related to the current employment situation facing area communicators: First, according to Kate Perrin of Professionals Solutions, there’s a fundamental difference between layoffs linked to this recession when compared to layoffs associated with the downturn of a decade ago. Perrin told us that, about 10 years ago, the communications community was seeing massive layoffs – layoffs that impacted a disproportionate number of senior-level people. While senior-level people are obviously impacted by the current recession, what we are seeing now, she told us, is much more selective than the massive layoffs seen in the past.
Also, the head of an area agency told us that area agencies have seen a downturn and, depending on the agency’s clients, it could be severe. He said that when chatting with his peers, no one is putting up the front that "everything's OK" - something, he said, no one would believe.
