-Battered by the recall of eight million of its cars for faulty accelerator pedals, states odwyers.com, Toyota hired "Democratic powerhouse firm Glover Park Group to deal with its image mess". The firm is headed by Joe Lockhart, President Clinton’s former speechwriter, and Carter Eskew, chief strategist to Al Gore’s presidential run. According to the odwyers report, the GPG hiring comes as Members of Congress promise lengthy probes into the Japanese automaker’s safety record. Odwyers stated that Toyota management reportedly frets that the company may face a U.S. backlash as “payback” for the woes of Detroit’s Big Three carmakers. The newsletter also stated that, as previously reported, Toyota has already reached out to Robinson Lerer & Montgomery, a WPP unit, for crisis work. The Associated Press also reported that the company hired Quinn Gillespie & Associates in D.C.

-Ogilvy PR will assist ASQ (American Society for Quality) – a global community of experts and the leading authority on quality in all fields, organizations and industries – with branding, message development and digital communications support. "ASQ has a positive impact on so many areas of industry and our economic life – manufacturing, the services arena, education, healthcare, government and community – and there are very powerful stories to tell as it evolves its mission and the way it serves its large member base around the world," said Michael Hatcliffe, managing director of Ogilvy PR's U.S. Corporate Practice. Ogilvy PR is supporting ASQ with a team drawn from its Chicago and D.C. offices.

-Sensical Design & Communication has launched Ruka Press, an independent publisher of nonfiction books “that explain the world intelligently”. The new company will focus on publishing books with a strong information-design component for a general audience. Ruka Press, based in DC, will initially rely on print-on-demand publishing, online distribution, and ebook sales in order to publish cost effectively. Ruka Press will use social media networks such as Twitter and Facebook to connect to potential authors and readers. Over the past six years, Sensical Design has specialized in book and publication design for non-profits and financial-services companies.  Sensical Design’s founder and lead designer, Daniel Kohan, said he decided to leverage this publishing experience to produce books that he will both edit and design. Elizabeth Cogan, who holds a Master’s degree in journalism from the University of Maryland, will help with selecting properties, editing, and promotion.

-Steven Cappuccio has been named director of media services for Shine Creative and Purple Minibike Media.  He previously had been with MVI Post. 

-TGD Communications won six awards in the Seventh Annual Service Industry Advertising Awards from over 1,400 entries nationwide. More than 300 advertising agencies and 900 institutions participated in the SIAA Awards, including a gold award for a Manassas Marketing Plan for US Foodservice.
